Beware those Official-Looking Mailings!
California small businesses and nonprofits often receive notices in the mail from organizations based in Sacramento that are intended to look like official government documents stating that if they do not send in a check for $150 or more, they could lose their corporate status. Many businesses fall for this scam, believing that they are required to pay this “fee” to maintain their good standing as a business entity. The Attorney General recently announced that he has filed suit against three of the worst offenders. Unfortunately it is necessary to read the small print on all official-looking documents and be very skeptical before sending money.
